Although elektrificering the last few years the upper hand, engineers are still looking into whether there are ways to make the engine itself more efficient, for example with variable compression ratios. Porsche dived into this recently patents.

The idea of variable compression rates (VC) is as old as the road to Rome, but was apparently interesting enough to keep investigating. Peugeot came in 2009 with something like that, and also the independent parties believe regularly the egg of Columbus to have found. The fact is that we in my know after all these years still no practical application of the principle have seen.

Also in the VW group is copious research done: last year dove into an Audi patent that would indicate to VC, and now we see -via Gizmag– plots drawings of the Porsche at the same point. We still soon the VC in production models?

Our guess: not anytime soon. R&D departments work continuously to create new, potentially interesting technologies, which, what haalbaarder than the other. That VC is being investigated does not mean that we also go back to see, but you can be there for the PR during the development of nice claims. If there is a breakthrough coming, then it’s relatively smooth to enter (although you still have to a timeline of a few years should think), but it could just as well have another 15 years on the board.

In terms of engine development, we expect first a far-reaching turboficering at Porsche. According to the rumors, get the 911 facelift on almost all the models have a turbocharger, with an introduction at the IAA in Frankfurt in september.

Update: extended noses in the patent (which in 2014 already have been registered) are you doing here.
