It takes 44 hours, but you will also have…a printed body. This project, with the name Strati, comes from the hand of the open source enthusiasts from Local Motors.
Let’s start with a geheugenopfrisser: Local Motors we know mainly of the Rally Fighter, a robust piece of off-road hardware. In addition, the business came out of Arizona in the news when BMW interest in the whole open source thing, and a competition wrote.
This week in Chicago the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) takes place. Between Thursday and Saturday morning, over a period of 44 hours, printed it, together with partners Cincinnati Incorporated (laser cutting systems) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory live an electro-car.
This Strati (Latin for ‘layers’) is made of carbon reinforced ABS plastic, and exists in the base from just 40 parts, although it must be said that the mechanical components (powertrain, but also the tyres etc.) obviously, there still need to be added. The roadstertje with his kekke turbo fan wheels reaches a top speed of 60 km/h and has a range of 190 km. After the unveiling, did the makers a testritje, images are HERE. In addition to vine, the creators sweet that it was delightful to hear.
Thanks to advances in 3D printing could be the Strati in a relatively short period of time, in contrast to, for example, the Urbee 2, where no less than 2,500 hours in sat down.
And what’s the practical use?
A showcase like this is fun, but ultimately it’s all about what you practice with your technology. Local Motors hopes as early as next year for vehicles to be able to produce, initially for the ş towns, but later, after the necessary approvals, also for use on highways and such. The construction principle is doing the most to Lego thinking: you print simply what you need, and build, very ‘custom’, a car.
Moar video? You can find it on Stratijunk.
With thanks to Sjoerd for the tip!
