As a car enthusiast, you have probably a list of cars that you would ever want to drive. Today line I one of that list: the Porsche Carrera GT.
In the early ’90 built Porsche a 5.5 liter V10 engine for the Formula 1 team of Footwork, but Porsche did little with it. Until the late ’90s the rules for the LMP1 cars at Le Mans changed, and the V10 was again dusted off. He was something opgeboord to 5.7 litres and in a prototype hung, but after two days of testing decided Porsche to concentrate fully on building the Cayenne because there is more money earned could be.
Still wanted a few people at Porsche would like something with the V10 and this was in 2000, a prototype for the Paris motor show spooned. The concept was Carrera GT called, and it featured a 5.5 litre V10. The response was overwhelming and by Porsche in the meantime a lot of money to earn with the Cayenne, it was decided to turn the concept into a straatlegale but virtually unaltered in production.
The car was in the then new factory in Leipzig in a limited edition built. There were 1500 cars is planned, but in 2006 it announced Porsche to the car is no longer to continue to produce because of changed legislation regarding air bags in the United States. As a consequence, the total number of produced Carrera GT’s eventually stuck at 1270 pieces.
The Porsche Carrera GT got the 5.7 liter version of the V10 on board, good for 612 hp and a torque of 590 Nm. That was substantially more than the 558 hp concept car, which was equipped with the 5.5 liter version of the V10. Thanks to the bizarre power would you get from 0 to 100 should be able to sprint in 3.5 seconds if you have the manual zesbak and link optimally know to operate. The top speed is 330 kilometers per hour,
The Carrera GT was extremely innovative. It is the first production car ever that had a ceramic link, for example. That link is also particularly compact, to the centre of gravity of the car as low as possible to be able to keep. The Carrera GT was the first car with a monocoque of carbon fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFP). That technique was used only in racing cars, but Porsche wanted as much as possible racetechnologie in this car to stop.
Thus, there is a completely flat carbon bottom plate, a diffuser and a base that is directly from the Porsche 911 GT1, the car that, in 1998, the 24 hours of Le Mans managed to win. All of these things, ensure that there at top speed, a downward pressure on the rear wheels is generated of 4000 newtonmeters. That is converted as if you were about 400 pounds on the rear axle press. Also, there are centerlock wheels fitted with behind-ceramic brake discs. Those discs are 15 inch at the front, the rims are front 19 and rear 20 inch large
Actually you can see the Carrera GT is always to drive open, but if you want to you can two carbon roof panels (2,4 kilos per piece) assembly to dry to sit. The panels fit in the front luggage compartment if you want to take. There were five colors on the Carrera GT; Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver and Seal Grey.
Inside the technology from the racing further clear: the chairs are made of lightweight materials. There is use made of carbon and kevlar to make them as light as possible, each chair weighs not more than 10,3 kilos. The shift knob is as close as possible to the steering wheel placed. The center console is also made of carbon, combined with magnesium and anchored to the chassis for extra rigidity.
But enough about all that beautiful technique, today is the day that I can drive with this childhood love. Since Porsche this car announced, I wanted it to drive, something especially with my love for the Formula 1 at the time, had to deal. Because let’s face it, a lot closer to driving a Formula 1 car, you can’t come.
If I start the engine there is literally a shiver through my body. The sound of ten cylinders that are in motion with a snarling roar, the vibration generated by the lightweight chairs my body reach: it gives me literal goose bumps. At the same time, I feel a few nerves. The ceramic clutch doesn’t seem to be the most user-friendly and I have ghost stories heard about the replacement costs. I kick the clutch in, engage first gear. The lever moves heavy and mechanical. And now for the big trick: do not fool around with the throttle, just very quiet the clutch in and the car controls the rest. I hear the gas slightly to swell without my right foot on a pedal hit. The clutch picks up, we’re rolling.
This car has very low mileage and I love the people at Gina Classics promised that I him below 2000 km. That means that we are condemned to the country roads around Drachten. The last thing I want is a phone call need to do to Gina Classics with the announcement that there is something in a ditch. Careful, I give a little gas, the response is resolutely but not bangmakend brutal. With a quiet corridor, I switch to two and to three and while I have the car quiet at normal operating temperature let come I feel though that this car has a firm hand is needed. The huge tires and the low weight ensure that the car is susceptible to traces and wrinkles. Just don’t pay attention and the car chooses its own path. Hands firmly on the steering wheel and the poker sit comfortably close to the steering wheel so that I never need to let loose. Well thought about it, Porsche!
If the car is warm cycled is I dare a time gas. The V10 whines out, what a great sound makes this car yet! Of course, I get a Carrera GT heard, but now I managed and to the symphony of cylinders can check it is still fatter. This huge screeching, howling scream is truly addictive. If you only think of the change of direction you have already done that. On these roads, I still can’t one-tenth of the potential appeal, but still I feel a bit intimidated. The Porsche 918 Spyder that last year I drove feels like a boodschappenautootje in comparison with the Carrera GT. The Carrera GT is a car for men with chest hair that grows on the chest of their chest hairs.
Secretly, I would be there now off to go and never looking back, but I decide it neat to deliver. The car that we borrowed comes from the stables of Gina Classics. Performed in Basalt black this car is by Gina Classics bought from the second owner from Portugal. The Carrera GT has just under 2000 miles ridden since he got the factory in november 2005 left. A really verzamelstuk so, although I can understand it if the prospective buyer can’t control and should just go away. This is the kind of beast that you want to learn to tame.
Today out the artist I have a Carrera GT of my list, but secretly he continues (just like the Porsche 918 Spyder last year) a little bit. Exactly the same feeling that I have with the 918 Spyder, I now again: I want to have a time with this car driving on roads that are me to give him more space to these cars really can exhausts. On a track or in the Bavarian Alps or something like that: wider roads, with more space and beautiful bochtencombinaties. Actually this first encounter me, but more curiously made, but I am truly thankful that I got the chance to be in this car to drive. A dream come true (to marketing move by Porsche there to pick up) has been released today, for which my thanks to Gina Classics!
