That a luxury car is also a lot of fun scheurijzer, the BMW M5 proved itself to be. However, that Peugeot’s ambitions had to do the same trick to carry out with the 607 is a lot in oblivion. Time to the memory to refresh.
The Peugeot 607 Pescarolo owes its name to ex-Formula 1 driver and four-time winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans, Henri Pescarolo. When his racing career came to an end, he helped others behind the wheel by setting up his own Sportscar team. For the 24 hours of Le Mans, every year two Courages from Peugeot engines fitted, a collaboration that in 2002 has led to the 607 Pescarolo.
Even the untrained eye can see that this car is a powerhouse. The shoulders and hips are 25 millimeters wider and the nose is 25 millimeters lower than the original. Large air intakes at the front and the dual exhaust, complemented by ventilated discs behind the 19-inch wheels with 245/45 R19 Michelins, suggest speed.
Look we are inside, the dark red leather to meet us. To paste to avoid during an exciting drive, the leather is perforated under the ass and against your back. Do you just slow down, then there is the opportunity to play with the 16×9 full-colour screen in the centre console.
The dark purple 607 Pescarolo was for the first time in the flesh, shown at the salon mondial de l’automobile 2002, in Paris. Here would be a V6 with over 400 hp in be hanged, drawn from the Courage C60 Pescarolo Sport (photo below) who was at that time the 24 hours of Le Mans reed.
Unfortunately the M5-competitor never taken in production. This could be to lack of space under the hood for the two huge turbo’s, the sequential controlled automatic transmission that takes all the peekaageweld could not cope, and the incredible torque steer through the front wheel drive because the Peugeot too stingy to invest in rear wheel or all-wheel drive.
Also remained the 607 Pescarolo in terms of power lag behind the competition. The BMW E39 M5 already had, since 1998, 400 horsepower under the hood. The RS6 threw here in 2002 50 hp extra against them, and the pk war was only just getting started. The Mercedes E55 AMG got 476 hp in 2004, and when the BMW M5 E60 in 2005, came out with 507 hp could Peugeot be forgotten. Too bad, because we had they are happy to given the chance.
