Mormon Meteor III
A pre-war machine that record after record was broken. Get acquainted with the Mormon Meteor III and Ab Jenkins.

Ab (David Abbott) Jenkins was an American with a snelheidsverslaving. With his modified Duesenberg Model J he went regularly to the salt flats of Bonneville to the counter to let them run. This model, however, was not strong enough to be a Curtiss Conqueror V12 aircraft engine (750 hp), to inns, but that was Jenkins’s wish, so he left by Augie Duesenberg in Indianapolis a new racing car build. A where are Curtiss Conqueror-block or in paste. For the sake of completeness: this tor had a capacity of 25.7 litres.

Ab called his creation the Mormon Meteor III. ‘Mormon’ because of his lifestyle, ‘Meteor’ because of the, well, snap.

Mormon Meteor III

His original plan was to have two Curtiss Conqueror-blocks in the 6.4-metre-long creation to scoop up. We are looking not really, since Mormons like to have more than one of something. It was eventually a single block, the front placed and linked to a three-stage transmission. The body was streamlined, and compared to that of the Mormon Meteor II was a closed cockpit made, with behind it a large fin for stability at high speed. The hogesnelheidsracer was on special tires from Firestone, and weighed in a total of 2,177 kg. We do not know whether that with or without a filled tank of 424 liters.

The car was in 1938 resulted in the colors orange and blue – the colours of sponsor, Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and made its debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Not long after, picked up the car on the Bonneville salt flats record on the 100 miles, where an average speed of 275,68 km/h was recorded. In the years that followed would be the rapid a mormon countless endurance records to break, to 24 hour races.

Mormon Meteor III

The Mormon Meteor III is currently in the Price Museum of Speed in Salt Lake City. He was recently dusted down to Jay Leno’s garage visit. Leno made a informative video about it, just like Leno does. He might be there for yourself in driving.
