BMW was the first with a slightly smaller SUV, which is next to the X5 came on the market. For many it was not mothers finest, but still knew BMW there’s still a whole lot to wear off.

In Munich they were not sure whether it was a hit would be, and so the production will be outsourced to the firm of Steyr in the Austrian Graz. The build quality is just as good, because the X3 has a good reputation in this field.

The handling is also fine, but the frame is in standard trim already on the hard side. With the optional M-sports suspension is the for many, even too many of the good, something to watch out for during a test drive.

Offer used cars

• On AutoScout24 are 175 BMW X3’s of this generation to purchase.
• Slightly more than half has a diesel engine.
• More than half have an automatic gearbox.
• Approximately 40% of the offer has leather trim and/ or a navigation system.
• A third of the offer has xenon lights.
• Less than a fifth has an open roof.
• Prices start at 7,000 euros.

Pros

• Good road holding.
• A lot of space.
• Good performance.

Issues

• Almost as big as the X5 from that period, but less interior space and less nicely finished.
• The materials used in other BMW’s nicer in that period of time.
• Most offroaders will only see asphalt, it still double-check the bottom for any damage of adventures off the beaten path.
• The actuators of the transfer case can give the spirit. Symptoms are burning lamps of 4×4, ABS and airbag. If the problem worsens you may experience noise (slosh, abrasion). A reason can be that there are different sizes/brands/types of tires are used and also the tires, ideally, before/behind, not very much different in terms of tread depth. Often, there is another goodwill gesture from BMW.
• Automatic transmissions need according to BMW, never new oil, but flushing and oil changes can (novice) fix or avoid.
• Electrical gremlins: check all the options including the audio system.
• The parking sensors front and rear give relatively often the spirit, so make sure that work well.
• Swirl flaps in diesel engines: these are the valves in the inlaattraject that are too weak. If they break off, they end up in the engine with all its consequences. Let them remove it if that has not happened.
• The turbo of the X3 20d is a known weak spot, but it is possible that once already replaced.
