We drove with a Porsche 911 Speedster, but that was the version based on the Porsche 964. We had also a time in step with the original.
From January to July 1989, when Porsche “Option M503” was built: an open Porsche 911 as a tribute to the Porsche 356 Speedster was designed, a car that in 1989, exactly thirty years from production. Designer Helmuth Bott was responsible for the design, that is already six years on the shelf I saw Porsche in 1989, decided the car to build. This was in response to the shrinking sales of Porsches in the United States. The Speedster is a two-seater (no back seat) 911 with low windshield, and something we only as a nooddak can describe. The windshield could reasonably easily be removed for racing purposes.
The Speedster is based on the cabrio, and the idea was in the first instance, to a kind of Club Sport version of it, something that Porsche at the time was still cheaper offered, because there is less standard equipment was present. It turned out that the accountants that is not cost effective, so was the Club Sport idea thrown overboard. Although the car first as an affordable alternative for a convertible was conceived, it was a more expensive, less well-appointed car than a standard 911 cabrio. Nevertheless, were buyers in the row, despite a big recession in America at the time were the 911’s like the proverbial hotcakes over the counter. One of the reasons that the cars are easily sold, it was likely that Porsche immediately announced a limited edition production.
There was a limited edition of 2104 cars built, in which customers could choose from the wide Turbo-look or a narrow body. That last option was not very popular, there were only 171 narrow bodies built. As a result, that is now terribly popular verzamelaarsitems become. Even rarer are the “slantnose” Speedsters, with a flat nose.
“Our” 911 Speedster is one in a popular composition: turbolook, ordinary headlights and Indian Rot with black interior. At the time of boarding falls immediately on all of that there despite the age of 26 years fantastic, actually new look. The cassette tapes of the first (and so far only) owner are still in the glove compartment, fantastic. But I don’t want music, today. I want that air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine hear. And how can that be better than without a roof?
The air-cooled 3.2 liter six-cylinder boxer engine in the back of this copy is good for 231 hp and 264 Nm of torque. As a result, a top speed possible of 245 kilometers per hour. A sprint to the 100 should be in about six seconds, fiksen, if you have the manual vijfbak at least easily know how to operate. And he sounds great. The roads around Drachten are really made for this kind of cars. Although the 911 Speedster at low speed quite heavily in the operation, he comes with float riding real to life. And you don’t really kneiterhard to go to enjoy. Everything is exactly: the gearbox, the steering, and the damping is also fantastic. Of course, you can go on the Autobahn, but that I would rather be with a roof over my head.
With a Fiesta ST or Clio RS will probably be faster on the track or what we take. The joke is that you are then best fun have, but not half as much as when you are in this Speedster. The sounds, the smells of the grass that you are right in your face to blow, and the sun, what’s on your head lights, but, above all, that great sound of that six cylinder boxer that of a low roar turns into a metallic snerp as you head towards the red area of the tachometer. Delicious, I can’t get enough of it.
Of course, we also have this fantastic Speedster borrowed from the lord of Gina Classics. The first (German) owner put just 13.750 km on the counter before Gina Classics this car with matching numbers and managed to get hold of. Performed in Indisch Rot with black leather and the almost obligatory 16 inch Fuchs rims. Also was there at the time, a check mark behind the “air conditioning” and “widebody”. The Porsche Geburtsurkunde, of course, is present.
