Maserati Tipo V4
Approximately 300 hp, a top between 250 and 260 km/h and a consumption of 1 to 2. And all this in 1929! Veyron, eat your heart out!

Today you are a whole sir if you have a V12 under the hood, but there have been times that you really belong with a zestiencilinder. With the departure of the Bugatti Veyron, there are currently no zestiencilinders more made, but what was actually the first car with a V16 under the hood?

You might expect that Cadillac was the first, that brand made in the years ’30 fuore with their V16’s, but nothing is less true. The silver arrows of Auto Union, or the troublesome cars of BRM were not the first. No, that honor is Italy, the Maserati Tipo V4 to be exact.

The were times that Enzo Ferrari another driver was at Alfa Romeo and Fiat there not even dared to dream of ever becoming the owner of Maserati. The three Maserati brothers, waved the scepter trident to the brand and they came up with the idea to be the ultimate racing car to build. Perhaps this was the first supercar with V16?

If the basis were two tweeliter achtcilinder package taken and that were at an angle of 25 degrees combined. Because sixteen cylinders are fun, but apparently not fun enough, there were two Roots-compressors, in addition to screwed. The result was a power output of around 300 hp, what a car weight of just 1000 pounds of a hard to tame car to date.

You had the proper balls to 250 km/h with glorified bicycle tires and a set of four mechanically-operated drum brakes, but no seat belts or other safety features. No one less than Alfieri Maserati took on Monza in 1929 at an average speed of 198.7 km/h, a record that in 1954 would be broken. In the same year picked up Maserati also set the record for the highest average speed over 10 km: 246.069 km/h.

Although between 1929 and 1931, a number of races were won, there was still room for improvement. In 1932 the Maserati Tipo V5 presented, and the V16 was opgeboord to a stroke volume of 5 litres. That resulted in a power output of 330 to 360 hp. In the run-up to the Second world War wanted Maserati a luxury sports car with V16 build for Benito Mussolini before Ferry Porsche one was built for Adolf Hitler. That failed, the plans went in the trash, and there was never a Maserati with zestiencilinder built.
