‘Driver’s license back faster at mental illness’

Different parties are before the relaxation of the rules concerning driving licences and persons with mental illness.
Currently serve persons up to a year after the ‘acute phase’ of their mental illness (psychoses, schizophrenia and mood disorders) of their pink card or piece of paper to hand in. The Health council advises the ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment now to those rules to adapt.
Because of the progress in treatment methods would no longer be necessary for patients with mood swings a year long behind the wheel to keep away. The board recommends that only in the acute phase of the driving licence and the card to give it back as soon as recovery sets in.
Persons who have a psychosis have had still have a driving ban of two years, but that period can be shortened to six months after clinical recovery. In addition, the council felt that persons who have a psychosis may have had later, just professional their driver’s license may use.
The Health council makes its recommendation in accordance with the Dutch Association for Psychiatry.
