’Hostage-taking in the UN-hotel Burkina Faso’

Armed men in Ouagadougou and a hotel were attacked. According to a senior officer who is there a hostage situation underway. The French embassy in the capital of Burkina Faso speaks of a ’terrorist attack’.

Friday night, about half-past eight, there were shots and explosions heard at the Splendid hotel in the centre of the African metropolis. The four-star hotel, close to the airport, is a stopping place for westerners and UN-employees. Witnesses speak of three or four men, blank or with an Arabic appearance, with a turban on the head, and victims with a ’European’ look.

A high officer who says to Reuters, on the basis of anonymity, that there is a hostage situation going on. “We try to figure out how many attackers there are. The operation can take several hours.” The hotel is used by troops of the French military operation Berkane, who is from Chad, the terrorists in the Sahel fights.

Security forces rushed after the attack directly to the avenue on which the hotel stands. On amateur images show that a number of cars, according to unconfirmed reports more than ten, ablaze.

A witness saw the attackers come out and shoot into the air. During a gunfight between the police and the attackers would be killed and injured – messages about it are not yet confirmed. The authorities are going to assume that the phone call radical muslims are.
