A group of researchers from the technical University Khelnickogo and Laznickova Institute of materials science and physics of solids has found a way to increase sperm motility by using special motors.
One of the main problems that cause male infertility, low sperm motility, so-called ascensoare. In this case, the sperm is too weak movements of the flagellum practically unable to move and thus unable to reach the egg and fertilize it.
The researchers used tiny spirals that are managed remotely using a directional magnetic field. Spiral freely captures the flagellum of the sperm and acts as the engine, pushing it forward.
The study’s authors say that the modern methods of artificial insemination have the odds to 30 percent. The use of special motors for sperm significantly increases the chances of success, although technologically this method is much more complicated. However, scientists hope that their method will be able to successfully complete clinical trials and will be used in practice.
