Is there a Fiat that is even uglier than the Champions? The Fiat Ecobasic concept is in any case pretty close. It was Fiat’s first attempt at an eco-friendly pastry.
At the beginning of this century, scored Volkswagen well with their Lupo 3L, an a-segmenter with a revolutionary consumption of 1 in 33. Fiat felt the hot breath in their neck and wanted the Germans hard dissen with the Ecobasic. A concept was in 2000 at the Geneva motor show presented.
The Fiat Ecobasic was a cheap, environmentally friendly car that is easy to produce and to recycle. The draft followed that philosophy. It was a 3,48 meters short four-seater, built from a steel spaceframe. The body was to weight and cost savings of plastic, just like the rear and side windows. There was not a drop of paint used, all the plastic was tinted with dye. The interior was characterised by four folding cheapass chairs with seat covers.
The car was fully modular and in kit designed. That would be great advantages for a rapid production in multiple factories across the world.
Also the end user had to take. So it could post a fourth door is added to the origin driedeurs Ecobasic, or replaced the roof panel through a roof module.
Under the hood of Ecobasic concept was a 1.2 MultiJet diesel with common-rail technology, which, at the time, progressive was because it met the Euro-4 requirements that only come into effect in 2005. The 45-hp mini-diesel was coupled to a semi-automatic transmission including an eco-mode. Together with the low resistance of 0.28 (Cw), and the weight of 750 kilograms, that brought the consumption less than 3 litres per 100 kilometres, good for a CO2-emission of 76 g/km. Unfortunately had no one of a low addition is heard.
The concept did 0-100 km/h in 13 seconds and had a top of 160 km/h. Fiat had such confidence in the technology that they decided that only the dealer with the engine could come. For users, there was a serviceluikje where the fluids topped up could be.
It was all in all a nice idea of Fiat, however, was the performance a little less. The design, none of them could appreciate, and didn’t fit into the vision of Fiat to be more on quality products to go to focus. Eventually decided to brand the car is not in production. If they had, would the thing according to Fiat only 5000 euros is going to cost you. In that respect it’s a pity.
