Frozen oil can be the key to shape-shifting materials

These unusual glowing uniforms look like they came from a strange puzzle game, but don’t laugh: perhaps this is the future materials. British and Bulgarian researchers found that oil droplets form the octagons, triangles and other not too natural, if they are subjected to slow freezing.

In addition, these droplets return to their original state if heated again. The results are more than strange — non-living chemical compounds taking artificial shapes, as do living organisms.

Too early to draw far-reaching conclusions, but you can find many applications to this discovery. If researchers can find a way to create the desired shape, it will be the key to materials whose properties can be changed on the fly. Thus, changing the shape of the device can be a first step towards the gadgets that are adapted to your requirements.
