The Georgian minister of Foreign Affairs Georgi Kvirikashvili was Friday nominated for the post of prime minister. He seems almost certainly to be the successor of georgia has progressively irakli Garibashvili, who this week resigned, less than a year before the parliamentary elections.

Kvirikashvili (48), who is also first deputy prime minister, has the support of the ruling Georgian Dream coalition. His candidacy is now submitted to the president and must get approval from the parliament, but the procedure applies as a formality.

Garibashvili gave no specific reason for his resignation, but the politicians of the opposition to link the decision to a decline of the popularity of the Georgian Dream.

Kvirikashvili was deputy prime minister and minister of Economic Affairs when the Georgian Dream, the party of former president Saakashvili defeated in the elections of October 2012. He was appointed minister of Foreign Affairs in september 2015.
