India: rape from the age of 16 is punishable

NEW DELHI –

India has passed a law that young rapists (from sixteen years) under the volwassenenstrafrecht drop. The law has accelerated adopted after protests against the release of a minor boy who in 2012 had participated in gang rape of a 23-year-old woman in a bus in New Delhi.

The parents of the victim had urged a change in the law after their daughter repeatedly was raped and beaten by the then seventeen-year-old boy and five adult co-offenders. The woman died two weeks later of her injuries in a hospital in Singapore.

Four of the adult suspects were sentenced to death, the fifth, hung himself in the prison. The death sentences have yet to be performed. The seventeen-year-old was, according to the juvenile law punished.
