Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France
This morning we got the first pictures of the Ferrari F12tdf presented. That is of course a direct reference to the 250 GT Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ from the end of the years ’50. When the A. S. O. still no money wanted for the use of the full name and car racing is still a sport for men with ties.

Colleague Smoke was this morning a little angry at Ferrari because of the name of the F12tdf. Small letters, incorrect spacebar, indeed, faint. But I suspect that this also has to do with the rights to the name Tour de France. Da’s nowadays a highly commercial circus, and Ferrari will be far from very that caravan want to keep it. And not wanting to pay to the A. S. O. is not to be forgotten…

In 1956 wins Roger Walkowiak, the variant on the bike, while Alfonso de Portago, his Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta to the profit in the ten-day Tour de France for cars sent. The then newly introduced car was immediately nicknamed Tour de France. A bit like with the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona a decade later, with the difference that this 250 GT Berlinetta actually the race and managed to win which he is named.

Under the hood is the famous Colombo V12, initially with a 240-horsepower, later with 20 Italian ponies extra. That would be on a car weight of approximately 1000 pounds! That low weight had not only to do with the aluminium body, the V12 was also very light. A six-in-line of the competition was soon twice as heavy…

Of the 250 GT Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ are only 70 copies were built. That in itself is exclusive, but those 70 instances are divided into four series, one prototype and five Zagato-built Specials. The different series are usually referred to the number of louvres on the c-style: respectively, no, fourteen, three, and one. Below is a small overview:

Tour de France Automobile

So, now that you are completely aware of the real Ferrari’s ‘Tour de France’, back to road racing. This was between 1899 and 1986, almost every year held here, with a few wars as a well-known exception. Ferrari did between 1956 and 1964 nine times in a row to win. Seven times with a 250 GT, the last two years, with a 250 GTO.

The automobile version of the Tour de France is even four years older than the well-known variant per steel carbon steed. That caused a lot of confusion, as you can understand. In 1992, the Tour de France Automobile back, but only for classic cars. Still takes, each year, an edition place, of doping scandals has so far not been the case.
