Alfa Romeo 156
If you are looking for a cheaper car of ten years old, then you can’t get the beautifully styled Alfa Romeo 156.

The 156 was in a number of variants built. A sedan, Sportwagon and Crosswagon were the choices you had. The first two were superseded in 2005 by the 159, but the Crosswagon Q4 would remain available until 2007. The 156 was gefacelift in 2002 and a lot more late in 2003. Incidentally, the 156 GTA is not in that facelift included.

For the benzinerijders there was a choice of engines ranging from 120 to 250 hp, for dieselrijders there was a choice of engines from 105 to 175 hp. There was one version with all-wheel drive and that was the Crosswagon, that is only if diesel was available. Wouters top tip: go for the 1.8-144 hp, that was the finest motor according to him.

Pros

  • It is an Alfa Romeo
  • Good handling characteristics
  • Nice engines
  • Beautiful design

Issues

  • It is not the most spacious car in its class.
  • The dashboard provides some unwanted and difficult-soluble beeps and kraakjes.
  • Check the mats and under the mats: wetness means leakage, a common problem with the 156. The cause is usually a bad door- / raamrubber. Also, Check out the back, because in the sedan, the water is often at the top of the back door. The base plates can eventually rust.
  • To it in a subtle way to express: the Selespeed automatic transmission is not praised because he is so great. They are at best mildly quite susceptible to failure, you’re better off with a manual gearbox.
  • The interval of the windshield wipers stop sometimes. If the interval used you can hear in poor windshield wipers are often a strange sound and sometimes there is a battle will be skipped. This problem will become more frequent, until the interval eventually stops working. Often is the cleaning of the plugs from the wiper engine enough to the problem to fix it.
  • The level of oil in particular, the gasoline should keep an eye on.
  • The sensor of the mass air flow sensor is also sensitive to pollution. Also in this case, it is usually a matter of cleaning, but be careful the sensor is not damaged because the sensor is an expensive part. The problem is usually by an irregular engine idling.
  • If you have a V6, keep in mind a lot of tankstops. In particular, the GTA lust a sip, you can count on a realistic consumption of around 1 in 5.
  • Do not wait too long with replacing the distributiekettingen and chain tensioners. Ignore what Alfa Romeo has specified for the maintenance interval: in gasoline engines, these can best every 60,000 km or three years to be replaced. The V6 and the diesels may every 90.000 km. You do, in all cases there should then also be the chain tensioners and the water pump immediately to replace.
  • If the car ratelt is probably the nokkenasversteller death.
  • The plastic plate under the engine do stukrijden on thresholds thanks to the soft front suspension. With a sports suspension or verlagingsset will this you funny enough is happening less often because the car is less doorklapt.
  • The front suspension eats up arms and draagarmrubbers like the hot sandwiches, especially with the heavier engines. The parts for this are not particularly expensive and a handy handyman replace them yourself.
  • The rear suspension sometimes makes also weird noise, the bolts through the aluminium suspension parts must be periodically tightened.
  • The spark plugs should also every 90.000 km to be replaced. Please note that Alfa Romeo’s Twin Spark engines have two spark plugs per cylinder!
  • The standard differential of the GTA will still collapse due to overload, particularly in warmer conditions.
  • The GTA has problems with rust on the front wings, against the front bumper.
