In the Netherlands end up old trams and subway cars simply by the oudijzerboer, in New York to dump them just in the sea. And that is not because it was so nice and easy.
On the contrary, in New York, they have a good habit to waste metro car complete to strip and then to give back to the sea. The steel casings provide an excellent artificial reef for fish and other dear animals. Within a few years, will the cars completely overgrown and a safe home to thousands of marine creatures. All plastics and hazardous materials are there on that moment so long and wide.
Photographer Stephen Mallon explained to the above ground process beautifully in his series ‘Next Stop Atlantic’, while the lords and ladies of New Jersey Scuba Diving also show how that there is under the sea level. That gives suddenly a very different look on Jersey’s shore… Maybe we can have this in the North sea, but also do, only with old cars instead of carriages. It seems that there namely still something useless become Jaguar’s, Bentley’s and Rolls-royce cars to stand/hang/lie.
