Technique: what you should know about reciprocating or rotary internal

Now Mazda with the concept after years of deliberation, yet again has dusted off, we had a nice time for a piece floor.
You also? Fine so be it. The wankel engine is distinguished on many fronts of the conventional internal combustion engine which we have extensively featured. So are the pistons triangular and turning them around, but we don’t walk on the things ahead.
The operation
The number of strokes in the rotary engine, corresponds to that of the conventional internal combustion engine. So We have a inlaatslag, a compression stroke, a arbeidsslag and an exhaust stroke. For a short description I have a piece from the previously mentioned article gecopy-paste.
– Inlaatslag, the piston goes down and the combustible mixture of gasoline and air is blown into the combustion chamber is drawn in,
– Compression stroke, the piston comes up and compresses the mixture together,
– Arbeidsslag, the spark plug(s) to give a spark, the piston is forcefully pressed down
– Exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens and the mixture by the piston to the top, and so pressed out.
The principle of a compressed mixture consisting of air and fuel in reciprocating or rotary internal standing. Spark plugs provide a spark so that the mixture ignites and expands, forcing the piston into motion. Then exhaust gases back to the combustion chamber from working.
Check out below the differences in appearance between the piston engine and the wankel engine:
Below gifje shows how the triangular piston in the engine exactly moves.
In the ordinary piston engine to find all four strokes in the same combustion chamber. In the wankel engine however is not. Because of the triangular shape of the piston and by the route which it travels, each started at a different place place. That seems in theory like, but it is crucial for the operation of the wankel engine.
In the ordinary engine, the strokes in one cylinder still on each other ‘wait’. after all, there is only one combustion chamber where the magic happens. The wankel engine is that is not the case, because of the triangular shape of the piston creates three separate spaces. Thus all four strokes at the same time, and that is exactly the reason why this technique is used to a limited capacity for relatively high powers. The ordinary internal combustion engine provides, in one cilnder each of the four succeeding one arbeidsslag for the power, but in a rotary engine are continuous arbeidsslagen place per piston.
Note in the above gifje also that the piston within saw tooth, as well as the crankshaft. Depending on the ratio between the number of teeth to rotate the crankshaft around several times per rotation of the piston itself.
The success once again schematically, for the extra bonus:
The stroke volume
How the swept volume of reciprocating or rotary internal exactly is calculated? However, the content is actually the difference between the maximuminhoud and the minimum content of the combustion chamber (which is so variable, as the piston revolves around). This is then multiplied by the number of pistons and you’re done. The Mazda RX-8 (driving test) so a capacity of 1.308 cc, but delivers a hefty 231 hp at 211 Nm.
Pros and cons
That the technology is far from perfect, works is no secret, but there are also benefits. By building the external dimensions of reciprocating or rotary internal very modest compared to the ordinary piston engine. The ontwerpvrijheden that it offers are evident. Also have reciprocating or rotary internal a fairly flat torque curve. The motor is fairly few moving parts, means that the technique itself is less complex.
Disadvantages there are also, of course. The corners of the triangular pistons are still responsible for the sealing of the various rooms and are subject to wear. Thus, for example, can onverbrand mixture, the exhaust from being hunted and there is the environmental benefit. An even greater disadvantage is the relatively high fuel consumption. So would the engine of the Mazda RX-8 about the same amount of fuel devoid as a big V8. It also provides the much needed extra lubrication to ensure that relatively much oil in the combustion chamber reaches. That’s less beneficial for both emissions as oil consumption.
To the extent that
Hopefully the above article, an impression of the functioning of this particular technique. Coming soon the story is undoubtedly a nice sequel in the form of a production car based on the brutal Mazda RX-Vision. We can’t wait.
