Pride of the working class. For Mother Russia!
Hot rods are typically American invention. In the ’30s began a scene to occur of mostly young men that their cars started to sway. Sometimes in order to make an impression on friends, more often to the police to escape during the bootleggen, the illegal firing and distribution of liquor during prohibition.
If there was something they in the former Soviet Republic of verafschuwden, then it was American capitalism. Not for nothing did the great leaders and generals are riding around in Russian vehicles that are shameless copies were of American limousines… slightly less equal Russians had to make do with Moskvitchen and Lada’s, cars of a more European stature.
Where is this story going? To this clash between the American and Russian culture. A real hotrod on the basis of a Lada 2106 (the luxury version of the 1200/2101). That ‘base’ with a pinch of Siberian salt, because the hot rod was built around a custom steel chassis. For the drive a real 1.6 four-cylinder engine with dual camshafts from the Lada 110-series. A strong block that with two turbo’s of Chinese make, to as much as 450 horsepower kicks in. Horses that make their way to the tarmac to find by means of two gigantic (and very American) Hoosier-rear tires.
Since the car is built around a load-bearing chassis, sheet metal for firmness no longer needed. For looks the more, because a dented and top-chopped Lada 2016 does the visual fine. Ergonomic slightly less likely, because you go through the narrow voordeurtjes and between the bars of the cage by your chair to reach, seems to be a pretty tricky job. Yet, it does this to me more than a ’34 Ford with thick rear tires and no hood, but I’m biased…
