In the Netherlands, we see the last years a constant decrease of the fatalities, but the downside of this is that the number of people that an accident seriously injured survives rises.

According to the most recent figures die every year 570 people on the Dutch roads. It wasn’t very long ago that this number in the four figures ran. In that respect, there are big jumps, but the rack is now a bit off. The goal is in 2020 to 500 deaths or less, although manufacturers like Volvo something more ambitious, with their zero kill objective.

Serious injuries

The number of serious injuries – here defined as ‘such were injured in the traffic that a hospitalization is necessary‘ – rises, however, since 2007 virtually unchanged. In 2014, this number was at 20.700 people, compared to 18.800 in 2013, for instance, the ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment announced today.

Itself gives no explanation, but the reasons for this we can of course speculate. The most likely is what concerns me in the ageing population. The netherlands has more and more older road users, which is also located within the city are vulnerable on the bike moving forward. The majority of accidents take place here, and when you are an old lady with a broken hip drive is a long-term hospitalization is inevitable. In addition, a part of the road users by the greatly increased safety of the cars nowadays alive but injured from a wreck, which used to his or her end had been served.

Minister Schultz used until recently, the objective, the number of serious injuries in traffic by 2020 to reduce to 10,000, but had it recently set sail.
