Saab Sonett III
Turbo, Aero, Viggen: the one version is even sportier than the other. There were scattered beautiful pearls out of the factory in Trollhättan. But the sportiest Saab, of course, was the Sonett III.

As its name suggests, was the Sonett III is preceded by two illustrious predecessors. I came out in 1956. There were only six copies were built of this Saab Super Sport, also referred to as the 94. The open two-seater had a two-stroke engine of 750 cc 57 HP produced. The beginning was there.

In 1966 introduced the Saab, the Sonett II, or the 97. Just as the I had this sportsman for a plastic body, but this time it was a coupe. Again with a two stroke under the hood, a 850 cc driecilindertje that 60 HP ophoestte. Almost literally, because that sounded the including transistor in the front a little. In 1967, saved Saab, the Sonett his kuchje and edited Ford’s V4 in the cabin, as they did in the 95 and 96. That was a great improvement. But not for the appearance of Saab’s small sportcoupé.

That Ford four-cylinder fit very well in the Taunus, or a Saab 95, but built in the Sonett V4 was the hood does not close. Att mäta är att veta, eh, Else? But we solve it on. With a big hump on the hood. The opinions were already divided over the design and by this powerpukkel blazed the discussion even further. That had to be different, Otherwise. But he knew there was no council, and asked Sergio Coggiola to the lines of the spicy coupeetje to review. Ideal fit to the hand, the design is Italians finally in the blood and devotion, collapsed Coggiola located on the Saab.

Probably a little too excited. For the Sonett III in production was applied Gunnar Sjogren’s the Italian design still needs a lot of more components of the II to be able to continue to use, that was cheaper. Long before Saab was eventually vermullerd grew the trees, not the sky, and had the plane – and car manufacturers a little sensible with their earned Crowns deal. That worked fine and so rolled a nice double sports car from the Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolag factory in western Sweden.

It was a considerably more homogeneous design has become, especially the front looked now much tighter with an almost flat bonnet and the wegklappende headlights. The back was also better than that of his predecessor, and a lot more practical. The tiny kofferklepje of the ⅱ was replaced by a larger, glass rear window which gave access to a useful luggage compartment behind the sporty kuipstoeltjes. That was easier to reach than the engine: there was only a hatch to the engine and the fluids to be inspected. If there is seriously gesleutel was needed was to the front in its entirety. But good that there is no sensitive Italian or British problem child built.

That piece of Technik was not a lot of attention, just as the bodywork. That was also this time made of reinforced plastic and is built on a steel chassis with many components of existing models. The gear lever was now on the floor and not on the steering column, that took you a lot sportier. The Sonett III was further ordered with luxury extras like leather trim, air conditioning, and daytime running lights behind the grill. Then real lights and not such kerstslingers as it is now, with violence in the design gepunnikt.

The design of the Sonett III remained fairly unchanged. In 1972, the grill adapted, the panel between the taillights was now black and the “voetbalstijl” alloy wheels were introduced. Because of the American market were a year later also the inevitable rubber koortslippen mounted. Safety bumpers, leather there but to live with it. The dashboard has undergone some changes and the tires were one size wider, but farther changed, there isn’t much to the sport-Saab. He was already cool.

That was underscored by a number of available colors as purple, yellow, orange and lime. Nevertheless walked down the interest significantly, partly caused by evil Arabs who around 1973 in addition to their oil continued to sit and to us a number of Sundays over the highway were cycling. A virtue of necessity, made, shit on the dresses. In 1974 left the last Sonett to the factory, after 8300 pieces of this lively sports car. It is estimated that nearly half of them still moving. Good news. Especially because the prices for this Swedish gadget is still much less then expected: for less than ten mille you have a nice copy in the garage. And well taken care of, Victor was unfortunately not to a successor.
