A station wagon on the basis of an A8? Audi came 14 years ago with a concept at the IAA called the Avantissimo.
The side view shows where the roots of this concept lie. The A8. Only when the rear axle is interesting. The special back shows, in my eyes, what agreements with the A3 (2003-2005). The classic stretched-out third brake light is then again of the A8’s.
The four exhausts give away that there is something under the hood. Jawohl, a 4.2 litre biturbo V8 good for 430 hp and 810 Nm of torque. The concept features Audi’s Quattro system, and, of course, is limited to 250 km/h. The body of the car consists of aluminum, for reduced weight. The A8 was already a big boy, and the combination of all-wheel drive and air suspension, plus a fat V8 in a large carriage, the Avantissimo also not a bright boy. Eventually the weight was unfortunately never made known.
The concept was 5.06 meters long and 1.91 m wide. Many of the elements in the styling were a year later included in the new A8 (D3). The Avantissimo was a gevalletje ‘we can, but we do not.’ For the Germans was the concept even more a demonstration to the outside world. A Avant on the basis of the A8 is, until the day of today there never come.
