Created a doctor-robot, which stimulates the growth of internal organs

The regenerative possibilities of our body, despite the rather large reserves are very limited, especially if the question relates to the recovery of the internal organs after damage. And experts Boston children’s hospital recently introduced an implantable medical robot, which can stimulate growth of damaged structures without disturbing their work and causing rejection by the body.

First robotic medical system intended for the treatment of esophageal atresia is a congenital hypoplasia of the esophagus with a complete lack of physiological lumen and obstruction. At the moment, this pathology can be cured with the help of reconstructive surgery or using a special method of stretching (a procedure called Focker). And for the last method, the patient should be kept in a medical coma for 1-4 weeks.

New robotic implant not only allows the patient to be conscious, but does not require a particularly strict bed rest. It is attached to the esophagus and himself covered with soft, biologically inert shell. The robot is fixed by means of two special ring-shaped fixtures, which are slowly “pull” the esophagus, stretching it in the right direction. The experiments on animals were able to achieve tissue grows to 2.5 millimeters in 24 hours. While animals showed no signs of discomfort, and the body retained its diameter. As stated by one of the study’s authors, Dr. Pierre DuPont,

“Nobody knows the optimum force that should be applied to stimulate growth of the body. The robot can also determine the amount of force and apply it accurately and effectively.”
