The AI begins to search for serial killers

Today one of the most difficult and frightening crimes include serial murder. And in the twentieth century, their number was greatly increased, and some serial killers are not found until now. But soon the police come to the aid of artificial intelligence that has managed to solve one mystery.

To search for serial killers will use the algorithm CARMEL, who managed to decipher a mysterious manuscript 105-page manuscript of the XVIII century. As writes the edition of the Next Web, AI will work on a long known scheme: in order to catch a criminal you have to think like a criminal. The algorithm needs to understand the course of human reasoning, and to “crack his thought” to calculate the person on the “style” of his crimes.

Now the algorithm is trained on the materials already solved cases archive which started in 1960-ies. One of the main Affairs, which is studying AI, is a story about a killer nicknamed the zodiac. He killed people in Northern California in and around San Francisco. In addition to the nickname, the assassin, nothing is known so far. He chose this pseudonym, which is indicated in the notes sent to the editor of local Newspapers. In addition, the envelopes were also found 4 cryptograms, in which the killer encrypt your data. Police managed to decipher only one of them. Now CARMEL goes through the biographies and the correspondence of hundreds of thousands of people, comparing them with the 340-character Zodiac cryptograms.

In addition, one of the researchers, Thomas Harrow created a similar algorithm “Project to combat the killings” (Murder Accountability Project — MAP). According to Thomas,

“Every year 5000 criminals avoid punishment. Therefore, our algorithm working on a “card unsolved murders”, identifying the areas where most crimes are committed, the perpetrators of which have not managed to find. The algorithm scans all the data that gives access to the FBI, and then allocates the cases that match the specific details that are typical for similar crimes committed (perhaps) one and the same person. After that, all data is plotted on a map, looking at which it becomes clear in which areas of the city most dangerous to appear”.
