Lidars provide unmanned vehicles in a three-dimensional vision, thanks to which the car can navigate on the roads. One of the leaders in the production of lidars for more than ten years, Velodyne is the company that produces the new device superior to the old in many ways. The latest development of the company — and 128-channel lidar sensor with the highest resolution and the largest range.
Thanks to 128 lasers installed in the case, cars with autopilot will be able to see in a much higher resolution. In addition, the new product scans the area from three to ten times faster than previous lidar that will be useful to new and “wiser” machines with the autopilot — they just need a better “vision”. The developers note that, although their devices provide machine vision systems, a good overview of the use of such lidars is better complete with cameras, radar and GPS.
Components of the new lidar will begin producing in early 2018, and by mid-year going to establish a full-fledged production, and in the end of 2018, the devices will begin shipping to key customers.
