Algerian troops kill radical fighters

ALGIERS –

Algerian soldiers have Friday, four islamist fighters were killed west of the capital. They were part of a group that last year nine soldiers in an ambush had lured and killed, reported the news channel Al Arabiya.

According to a statement from the ministry of Defence were the four “neutralized” in the province of Ain Defla, where weapons, ammunition and grenades have been seized. Terrorist organisation al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb had claimed responsibility for the attack on the nine soldiers in July 2015, also in Ain Defla.

Algeria is emerging as one of the more stable countries in the region after the war with islamist groups in 1990 and is an important ally in the western campaign against the islamic militants.

But al-Qaeda affiliated fighters and a splintergroepering who are loyal to the Islamic State are still active, especially in remote mountainous areas and border regions in the desert.
