Skoda Tudor
A timeless beauty on Suberb basis. Why do they have this in hell never built?

Skoda is one of the oldest car brands in the world, with a rich history of models, but at the end of the previous millennium, the brand is mostly associated with cheap eastern Bloc look. After special model Felicia, the late ’90s and early zero three solid, albeit somewhat boring cars on the market, which is a new beginning for Skoda though. First, the Octavia, the Fabia and the Superb. That last was actually a Chinese Volkswagen Passat B5 with a long wheelbase and a Czech cover.

A small but well-organized line-up, but also wars of any kind of frivolity. In 2002, that will change. On the one hand, with the 180 bhp Octavia RS, but especially with the beautiful Skoda Tudor Concept. Just as Octavia and Superb, it is also Tudor, a historical name from the long Skoda-history: in the early 50’s also the Skoda 1101/1102 as a Tudor through life.

More important than the name, however, is the car itself. The Superb word, namely a sleek, timeless one (hence the name) coupe. It is remarkable how ready the Tudor looks like. No oversized rims, no mini-mirrors or state of the art ultra-laser-beam-headlights. The dashboard is indeed designed differently than in the Superb, but looks nor overly futuristic or unrealistic. Under the hood Skoda’s thickest motorization from the Superb: a dertigkleps 2.8 V6 with 193 hp. Creamy and smooth, but again, not overdone.

Unfortunately, we are made happy with a dead sparrow, because as production ready as the Concept looks, the Tudor turns out to be nothing more or less than an exercise of Skoda’s design department. On a coupe from Skoda, we are waiting still in vain. A pity, because with the 110R and Rapid features Skoda decades ago proved fun ‘sports cars’ to be able to build. No, instead, went to Skoda being silly, to do with the Roomster, which will soon return as a second generation, which is nothing more or nothing less than a Caddy with a different logo. Solid brand with Skoda, but a bit boring.
