How many times will greet the New Year the crew of the ISS?

Work on the International Space Station is not only a strenuous duty, experiments and dangerous spacewalks. The station crew is allowed to mention the various holidays in accordance with the culture and preferences. One of the most interesting is New Year, because unlike us, are in the same time zone, the astronauts are in constant motion around the Earth. So, flying in orbit, they can celebrate the coming of the next year, a lot of times.

It is worth noting that the first orbit at New year met Soviet cosmonauts Georgy Grechko and Yuri Romanenko in 1978 aboard the station “Salyut”.

A few days ago on the official channel of “Roscosmos” on Youtube was posted new year’s greetings from Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko. Full version video greetings are available at the end of the article. Oleg said that this time the crew of the International space station will welcome the coming 2019 15 times. Generally depending on the position of the stations in the new year it can occur 16 times. Oleg Kononenko reminded that 2018 was the year of the jubilee of the ISS since its construction began 20 years ago in 1998. Also, the cosmonaut passed your comments and appreciation.

“Thanks to the talent and professionalism of designers, engineers, and astronauts from different countries in our space house completed 58 major international expeditions, the crews of which orbital become one big family. I’m happy to be a member of this family, and I congratulate all my colleagues on the anniversary. Let’s take care of this world, everything in it, and enjoy every minute of it, because dreams come true, happy New year!” — quoted cosmonaut RIA Novosti.

Interesting is the fact that, as previously reported, this time on the ISS brought the tangerines. Citrus aroma without which no cost, no New Year. As head of the Department of nutrition of the Institute of biomedical problems (IBMP) Alexander Agureev,

“The station brought the 4 pounds of apples, 3 pounds of oranges and 3 pounds of grapefruit. Also, the crew was asked to bring 10 cans of caviar. It is usually delivered to the ISS oranges because tangerines reach is not in very good condition. However, in celebration of the New year, it was decided to make an exception.”

Happy New Year! Don’t forget to congratulate your loved ones, and members of our chat in Telegram.
