Data collected by the spacecraft of NASA “Juno” with the help of the JIRAM instrument, indicate a new source of heat close to the South pole of IO. It can be previously unseen volcano on Jupiter’s moon. Infrared data were collected on 16 December 2017, when “Juno” was 470 000 kilometers from the moon.
“New hot spot, caught JIRAM, for IO 300 kilometers from previously discovered,” says Alessandro Mura, the researcher team “Juno” from the National Institute of astrophysics in Rome. “We do not exclude the movement or modification of previously discovered hot spot, but it is hard to imagine that it could overcome this distance and remain the same”.
The team of “Juno” will continue to evaluate data collected during the flyby on December 16, and JIRAM data that will be collected in the future (even more excitement) approach to IO. Previous mission studies by NASA, which visited the Jupiter system (“Voyager” 1 and 2, Galileo, Cassini, New horizons) and ground observations have detected on IO 150 active volcanoes. Scientists expect to detect about 250.
