Scientists from USA have developed a synthetic analogue eyes

The new invention presented scientists from the School of engineering and applied Sciences at Harvard University — they have created an artificial eye, working on the principle of man, reports RIA “Novosti” with reference to The Harvard Gazeette. The device consists of a square metalens and artificial muscles made of polymer and electrodes.

“This invention will be useful not only in ophthalmology. Eyes perfect for upgrading microscopes, cameras mobile phone and can be mounted in headset virtual or augmented reality,” says Federico Capasso, Professor of applied physics, head of the project and the author of the article.

Properties metalise thickness of 30 micrometers can be controlled by artificial “muscles” that are placed around the lens and consisting of a transparent electrode and an elastic dielectric material. To the electrodes to apply the desired tension by squeezing or stretching the lens — so you can change the focus and correct optical defects.

“We are taking another step forward to create the possibility of dynamic correction of aberrations such as astigmatism and image shift, which naturally can not do the human eye,” says the graduate student at SEAS Alan Chez.

At the moment the Harvard management development and technology prepares necessary for the protection of intellectual property documents, and exploring the possibilities of commercialization of the invention, but specific plans for the use of the “eyes” were not disclosed.
