New development Alphabet X will allow you to connect to the Internet in rural areas of India

The division of the Alphabet stamped X has developed a technology Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC), a new type of optics, thanks to which you can connect to the Internet large rural regions.

Now the Alphabet has signed an agreement with the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, where the state purchased 2000 devices FCOS. They are small boxes that are mounted on poles with mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, and then communicate with each other using light beams, providing coverage to Internet speeds up to 25 Mbps for individuals and 100 Mbps for businesses and organizations.

Now only 20 percent of the residents of the Indian state have access to the Internet, whereas by 2019, local authorities expect to connect to a network of another 12 million new users, among whom are not only individuals but businesses from organizations.

Technology FSOC was used by the engineers Alphabet and earlier in the project Project Loon — then it was planned to distribute the Internet using special balloons with FCOS.

The FSOC installation on poles is much cheaper runs on the balloon, the effect turns out not worse, so soon the team of engineers Alphabet arriving in India for the project.
