Russia is working on a wheelchair controlled by gaze

High technology are designed not only to facilitate our lives, but also improve the quality of people with disabilities. Russian scientists on the basis of the research center “Kurchatov Institute” has developed a new wheelchair generation: it will give the opportunity to its owner to control the device movement with a look or just by reading the brain signals.

The carriage is equipped with instruments for recording the direction of gaze, as well as electrodes to read brain activity. Remarkably, in the development of the instrument took an active part the young scientists. As stated by an employee from the Department of neuro-cognitive technologies of the Kurchatov Institute Vadim Ushakov,

“For children with engineering abilities, it was quite interesting task. The participants in our project of change in the educational centre in Sochi Sirius gave this a lot of time. Ideas that appeared during the development, seems quite interesting. We would like to improve this prototype and to provide it with lots of different functions, to release to the market the most perfect product”.

The device itself works as follows: before the user has a display, which displays the necessary commands. To activate the desired — just look at her. Another method of control involves the use of a special helmet with electrodes. In this case, the screen is not needed and the user can control the wheelchair by thought.
