In car parks, you may think directly to ugly masses of rock, with a musty odor, and tight bends that are not made for your W140 or Jaaaag XJ. It can also be different.

Since 2006, organises the Association for Dutch architects’s an election for the architectural masterpiece of the year. Last year went to Rotterdam CS with the honour to get, but what was the successor of this Fyra palace?

The choice is, once again, fell on a building with a 010-esque flavor, because it is a parking garage in Katwijk, the home of renowned Feyenoorder Dirk Kuyt. Out of 125 submissions was the creation of Royal HaskoningDHV was awarded the title of ‘Best Building of the year 2016’. As icing on the cake won the building also the audience award, thanks to more than 5,000 votes. It is the second time in a short period of time that a Dutch garage a wins an award after this temporary car storage in Rotterdam last year was declared the best European garage.

Where The Hague is a city, behind the duinûh, the parking in Katwijk, a city for cars that are primarily under the dunes. The garage threw among other high-eyes because it is so well integrated in the Dutch dune area that that bowl of water behind that lies a little bit in control. Jury-head Hanneke beginning, the market trader brings the following words:

“The underground parking is ground breaking not only because it is an exceptional building, but it also illustrates how the Netherlands have to be innovative in its approach, when it comes to protecting our coastline for the future.”
