Portugal lasted four days on renewable energy

Португалия продержалась четыре дня на возобновляемых источниках энергии

Last week Portugal was able to survive without fossil fuels as much as 107 hours, making another step towards the transition to clean and renewable sources of energy. The experiment began at 7 am on Saturday, may 7, and continued until the evening of 11 may, when it was restored all power plants.

In the late 80-ies in this country, was built a modern thermal power plant near the town of sines, recently it was noted by the world wildlife Fund, where she was named one of the biggest sites, polluting Europe with emissions. In addition, she ranks 13th in the list of the 30 most dirty industries in Europe.

And although it is early to rejoice, because until a full transition to renewable and clean sources is still far away, be happy for Portugal. The country has managed to survive for four days, relying on a few hydropower plants, energy from the Sun and wind. My role in this small but important experiment was played by the European Union, and was recently issued a Directive that the member countries of the UN must get at least 31% of electricity from renewable sources.

Portugal is not the only EU country making strides in this important undertaking. In Germany, too, it happens the excess energy produced through wind and solar power. When this occurs, the gas supply is automatically turned off that no-no, and allows you to save a bit of gas, coal, and at the same time and money.
