This seems to be a K. O. to be…
Today, the recipe for the big sportsedan. A Twin Turbo V8 for power and efficiency (except for Jaguar and Cadillac) linked to an automatic transmission or DCT. Preferably, with four-wheel drive, because the capabilities of more than 550 hp (previously 600) are difficult to work on the rear wheels. In the previous generation E-class gave Mercedes the option for AWD, and apparently the next M5 with optional AWD. As effective, but not fun. Because you want rear wheel drive. And let’s take a puristic, we also want a manual gearbox. And the engine must be atmospheric.

BMW M5 (E39):
The E39 5 series is still one of the best E-segment sedans. Sporty but sporty, brilliant engines and a name prevent. Only real downside what I can remember was that the legroom in the back is not really sufficient. Personally, I think that BMW that intentionally has been done, different went all taxi orders from Stuttgart to Munich 😉
In 1998, the M5 was a genuine thrill: 400 hp out of a 4.9 liter V8. Pull? 500 Nm. 0-100 in 5.2 seconds and a limited top of 250, but the M5 was much harder. According to Sabine Schmitz (still a Reck) around 300, they had to be ‘her’ M5 E39 at 299 km/h is bounded. I, the undersigned, will never forget it. One epic round Nordschleife followed. Despite many drifts, she’s got just heavy serious stuff. Kudos.
And so everyone has a reason to keep the E39 M5. Because you have sportwagenprestaties in a sedan. A golden combination, but it was rarely the ‘blend’ as well as in 1998. Manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, atmospheric V8 and four seats. What would one wish for more?

Porsche Panamera S (970, MT)
Ok, the Panamera is not really a sedan, it is in fact a hatchback, or better said, a liftback. And really a beautiful shape, it is not to mention. It is range packed with versions that the lover does not directly address (hybrids, diesels, 4wd). The Turbo S is extremely fast, but not fun. The GTS is already pretty far in the right direction, but 4WD and PDK are effective spoil-sports. However, there is one implementation which is however in the price lists, but almost nobody ordered: the Panamera S with manual gearbox. And that was indeed fun!
The parallels with the M5, its almost scary. Okay, the Panamera is significantly longer (19cm) and wider (13cm), and therefore a little bit (50kg) heavier. But it is the action which is almost identical, it seems to zijnn. In the Panamera S is a 4.8-litre V8, good for 400 hp and 500 Nm. This was linked to a manual zesbak with rear-wheel drive. Thus, its performance is also almost identical, the Panamera S does the standaardsprint in 5.6 seconds, but then runs by up to 285 km/h. Also the brakes (360mm front, 330mm rear) are almost the same size, the tires are even exactly the same size: 245/45/18 front and 275/45/18 rear.
It seems that there is among engineers a M5 fan was and decided to use this version of the Panamera to develop. Then with litres of Jägermeister’s marketing department to convince that this is a valuable addition to the range. Until the facelift, you could have one order, then came to Porsche to figure out that they fun version built and was ie replaced by a V6 with turbo’s and a vending machine.
