Profit and success stories, as you hear the car manufacturers regularly. But what about the shadow side of the car industry? Which models were downright financial fiasco?

To answer that question you need to really all aspects of the process of building and marketing a car to take with you. Twist it tricky to get those numbers to get around, but the Us research firm Sanford C. Bernstein thinks a lot.

At the top of the list with ‘estimated losses’ we see Mercedes with Smart, who over the past years 3.35 billion euros would have made the plunge. Place two and three are for the Fiat Stilo and the VW Phaeton with respectively 2.1 and 1.99 billion reported loss. At spot four we find the now forgotten 1007 Peugeot, which the French 1,90 billion saw evaporate.

If we look at the most loss per vehicle, topt is the Bugatti Veyron of the list. This which hypercar, which are never profitable and had to be Uncle Piëch, running 4.617.500 euro loss per car. Thus, the estimate of Sanford C. Bernstein. (via The Economist)
