The ISS crew hid in the shelter from solar flares

Astronauts from the International space station on the tenth of September, had for some time to hide in a special shelter because of the danger associated with flare — this was told by the head of the research Institute of nuclear physics Mikhail Panasyuk.

At a press conference in the media center MIA “Russia today” Panasyuk said that the beginning of increasing proton events and the radiation exposure coincided with the time when the ISS passed “past the Sun”. So working on the ISS, the astronauts received the command “Alert”, and then the entire crew took their places in the shelter, which is equipped with a space station.

The team was given at 20:00 Moscow time, as at this time the flux of protons is stronger than during the last solar flare, recorded on the seventh of September. Panasyuk noted that a powerful stream of protons can penetrate the shell of the vessel and pose a serious threat to the health of the crew.

The flare, recorded on Wednesday, became the most powerful in the last 12 years.
