“Rosatom” has successfully tested the installation for water treatment “Fukushima-1”

In the autumn of 2014 the Japanese government has selected the Russian state Corporation Rosatom as a partner for implementation of demonstration project to test the technology of purification of radioactive water at the plant “Fukushima-1”. A year and a half later the head of “Rosatom” reported about the successful testing of a demonstration plant, which Russian specialists have worked out the technology of water purification from dangerous radioactive isotope — tritium.

About the successful testing of the installation to journalists, RIA “Novosti” said the Rosatom Director for public policy in the field of radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuel and decommissioning nuclear and radiation dangerous objects Oleg Kryukov. After the 2011 accident at the plant “Fukushima-1” was formed of liquid radioactive waste volume exceeding one million cubic meters. The concentration of tritium in contaminated water exceed the maximum permissible limits of the who 100 times. The Japanese have the technology to clean polluted waters from isotopes of cesium and strontium, but for tritium is similar to the technology they have there.

On the implementation of the project on water purification from tritium the specialists of the enterprise RosRAO and the radium Institute named after Khlopin, which is part of Rosatom state Corporation. First test by Russian engineers a demonstration plant for water purification was carried out on one of the sites of RosRAO. According to statements by representatives of “Rosatom”, is a unique setting that is different from the international designs reduced power consumption.

“The so-called model solution (simulating contaminated water at Fukushima-1″) was tested. We have achieved the result. The result is successful. We achieved the desired reduction, expansion of water purification,” said hooks last Thursday in Murmansk regional public forum-dialogue “Nuclear energy and the development of the Arctic”.

Hooks also noted that on-site emergency station “Fukushima-1” in any case have to build a large scale complex water purification, because without it, it will be impossible to cope with the planned scope of work. What will happen to the development of Russian scientists – to tackle the Japanese side. The decision is likely to be taken after the Japanese experts will be acquainted with the results of the experiment carried out by the Russian colleagues.
