Cancer-causing vaccine developed

We need to test it on humansScientists reported that they have created two experimental vaccines that will protect against infection with a cancer-causing monovirus. Vaccines, so far only tested on animals, block two pathways for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) to enter the body. This virus lives in two types of cells: immune B cells, which produce antibodies, and epithelial cells, which line the inner and outer surfaces of organs. New vaccines are able to “work” with both types.

There is currently no approved and proven vaccine that protects against the Epstein-Barr virus, which infects more than 95% of adults worldwide . This virus was the first human virus associated with cancer, primarily lymphomas and stomach cancer.

Scientists report that the new vaccines elicited strong immune responses in mice, ferrets and monkeys. They also blocked the development of lymphoma in rodents transplanted with human stem cells. The researchers now hope to begin human clinical trials of vaccines within a year.
