Scientists chipped a carnivorous plant and took it under control

The Venus FlytrapA group of scientists successfully took control of the Venus flytrap, a carnivorous plant, by implanting a tiny chip into it. This “artificial neuron” was able to make open and close. The chip imitates the methods of processing and transmitting information by the brain.

Artificial neurons imitate biological ones, increasing the concentration of ions in cells. So the scientists managed to evoke the natural reflexes of plants and make them slam shut.

Scientists propose to use such chips not only in carnivorous plants, but also in implantable medical devices, as well as in soft robots.

The Venus flytrap catches its prey, mostly insects, with a specialized apparatus formed from the margins of leaves. The closing of the trap is initiated by fine sensitive hairs on the surface of the plant's leaves.
