Not the cheap gasoline from the storyI like it. If you, as a respectable, hardworking citizen, have finally set up a business in cheap petrol, the police will come and throw a spanner in the works. You are also not allowed to do anything these days.
I was very busy last night at a gas station in Amsterdam North. A row of an estimated 40 to 50 cars had gathered at the unmanned gas station to fill their tank there, AT5 reports. With today's prices, that is strange to say the least, the police also seemed to think.
It could of course be the case that the gas station took the same kind of action as a petrol station from Eindhoven last week. The owner there had drastically reduced prices as a gift to his customers on the occasion of his 60th birthday. There was also a huge line of cars waiting. Cheap petrol, motorists like to queue for that.
But that turned out not to be the case here.
What was going on then?
Well, the petrol was in Amsterdam-Noord last night very cheap indeed. That part of the story is correct. But it wasn't quite fair this time. Because as it turned out, a man of 24 had set up a lucrative, but illegal business in cheap petrol.
He had a fuel card, with which he paid for the petrol for the motorists. In other words, he filled the tank for – say 'em- 1.89 euros per litre. He settled that with his fuel card. The motorist who received the petrol paid -again grab 'em- a euro per litre.
The fuel card might have been stolen ?
Win-win, you would think, only this trade was of course completely illegal. This also became apparent when the police came to take a look. Not only the 24-year-old petrol dealer ran off, the customers did too. This created a chaotic situation according to the police.
After a short chase, the man was arrested and both the fuel card and the money earned were confiscated. Police are still investigating whether the fuel card was stolen. The customers have not yet been found.
Then lastly a question of conscience. Would you also fill up with cheap petrol if you knew that the business came from theft? Or would you let your portion pass you by?
