Volkswagen's electric 'hot hatch' goes into production

Remember the Volkswagen ID.X? New? So it goes into production.

It is no longer self-evident that you as a manufacturer have a hot hatch in your range. For example, there is no longer a Ford Focus RS and OPC is now also a thing of the past. However, there is still the Golf GTI. The only question is: how much longer? The ID models are in fact ready to gradually take over the Volkswagen model range.

That means the end of the GTI label, but something will take its place: the GTX label. We saw these letters for the first time on the ID.4 GTX and the ID.5 GTX will follow shortly. Those are just not very sporty cars. At least, the ID.4 GTX wasn't. The sloping roofline of the ID.5 GTX will probably not change that.

Volkswagen also has the ID.3. With its compact dimensions, this car lends itself better to a sporty version. It was not yet entirely clear whether that would also come to pass.

There was a concept car, called the ID.X. Remarkably little publicity was given to it. We only know about the existence of this car because CEO Ralf Brandstätter shared a rather amateur-looking photo collage on his LinkedIn page.

Luckily he was kind enough to share some info too . The prototype is 200 kg lighter than a normal ID.3, has 328 hp and does 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. To top it off, the ID.X also features a Drift mode. As you can see in the photos, there are also visible upgrades in the form of green-yellow accents, thick rims and Alcantara sports seats.

For those of you that all this sounds like music to the ears, there is good news: Ralf Brandstätter has since confirmed that the ID.X will go into production. That is, the ID.X will form the basis for a production model. It will probably not be called ID.X, but simply ID.3 GTX. Further details are not yet revealed.

The Volkswagen CEO does have another interesting piece of news: he hints at an electric car with the R label. If the ID.3 GTX turns out not to be worthy of the name hot hatch, we can always wait for an ID.3 R.
