The developed material to create an “eternal” tires and sneakers

Recovering body parts, clothes and shoes at the moment seem to be something fantastic, but scientists are struggling to make the impossible real. Recently they managed to grow amputated finger mouse, and now a group of scientists from the University of southern California invented a material that is able to restore its structure. It is believed that he is perfect for the manufacture of automobile tires, Shoe soles, and even parts for robots.

Автомобильные шины

Material designed for 3D printers that print by photo-polymerization method. This term refers to the use of light to achieve a liquid resin to the solid form. Recovering properties arise from chemical reactions involving thiols. Interacting with oxidants, they turn into disulfides, which are able to recover their original shape after damage.

Unfortunately, the presence of disulfides slows down the solidification of the figures, so the researchers it was important to find the optimal concentration of substances. After several attempts they managed to achieve the best balance of properties of self-repair and the time of solidification.

The manufacture of objects of the resulting material takes only a few tens of minutes, depending on size. After mechanical damage, the material recovers its structure in just a few hours. It is noteworthy that with increasing temperature the recovery is much faster.

The researchers intend to continue the work on improving material. They want to achieve its strength enable it to create bulletproof vests, which are restored even after the bullets hit.

If you have such material, no matter what subject matter would you from it? Write their own versions in the comments, and to discuss the invention with others in our Telegram chat.
