Origami offers his designs for the moon and Mars

Origami and high-performance fabric will transform the architectural plans smart human habitats and research stations on the moon and Mars. The first field testing of the project prototypes of buildings-origami MoonMars will be presented at the European planetary science Congress (EPSC) in 2018 in Berlin, Dr. Anna Sitnikova. MoonMars is cooperation ILEWG, ESA-ESTEC, research institutes and textile architectural Studio Samira Boon. Team MoonMars includes the structure of the origami in the processes of digital weaving to create complex shapes that can be compact to transport and easy to deploy with the help of pumps or robotic mechanisms in the environment of another planet.

“Structures of origami, created from a textile that can be deployed in many various ways. They are lightweight. They can be easily deployed and used in different configurations and sizes for flexible use of space. Structures remain functional in varying conditions, which positively affects their life,” says Sitnikov.

Building origami for the moon and Mars

In a hostile space environment of high-performance textiles and flexible nature of the origami can provide a unique architectural advantages. Angular cell structures origami mean that the micrometeorites are less likely to fall into the surface under an angle of 90 degrees. Solar panels built into a flexible shape, can follow the sun, collecting more energy during the day. Transparent and opaque cell can be rotated to change the interior lighting and climate.

In September 2019, the team will travel to Iceland to deploy their prototypes in the cave system of lava tubes. The next milestone will be samorazvitie home-origami. It is possible for other planets, including Mars and the moon, it will be the best solution.
