The longer the screen smartphone — the worse the sleep?

Smartphones are becoming an increasingly important part of everyday life. But the question remains, what is the impact of their frequent use on sleep quality. Poor sleep is associated with such health problems as obesity, diabetes and depression. A study conducted by Matthew Christensen (Christensen Matthew) and his colleagues from the University of California (San Francisco, USA) showed that the use of smartphones with the included screen reduces the quality of sleep.

To test the hypothesis that the increase in screen time smartphone usage leads to a decrease in sleep quality, Christensen and his colleagues conducted a test. During the test, the data were analyzed from 653 adults.

Study participants installed on their smartphones, the application that took into account the time to operate the device when the screen is defined as the number of minutes each hour, during which time the screen is on. The test lasted 30 days, during which participants also recorded hours of their sleep and its quality.

In the study, it was found that on average, during this period, one participant had to 38.4 hours of screen time using your smartphone. That is, the screen of the smartphone was activated an average of 3.7 minutes per hour. The higher was the average screen time use smart phone, the lower was the quality of sleep and its duration. This is especially noted when using the smartphone before bedtime.

However, despite the expected findings, which were obtained in the course of the study, there are some limitations, including the fact that participants reported data on their own. Therefore, the belief that sleep quality deteriorates with increases in time to operate the screen, no. It is possible that the results of this study are further confirmation of the theory that the sleep quality is negatively affected by using a smartphone before bed.

Earlier studies have suggested that daylight could help to combine the Internet at night and sleep. It is not excluded that the effect on sleep disturbances may have not so much the fact of using smartphones, as those emotions that one experiences before going to sleep, preventing the body to properly relax.

However, in any case, it must be remembered that providing constant access to the Internet and digital devices are massively present in the life of mankind only a few years. During this short period simply was not possible to accumulate sufficient data to make any significant degree of certainty what kind of impact smartphones have had on certain aspects of human health.

How, in your opinion, you should use the smartphone that it did not reduce the quality or quantity of sleep?
