And yet it has something, I’m a fan of the genre. Cars to be quick, but that is not of the roofs afschreeuwen. The first generation BMW M5 had this also, a set of other rims, a larger diameter for the exhaust, a few badges and some extra (or less) of chromium. As a connoisseur, you see that it’s something special, but for the neighbors just drive a A4. That’s cool, but it will of course not work for a bright yellow S4.

Slightly different styled front and rear bumper, slightly different side skirts, and 18”wheels make the S4 not immediately be distinctly different than an A4 (driving test). Most notable are perhaps still the aluminum mirror covers and the thicker back. Four exhausts find a place in the aluminium diffuser, to the rear is an S4 in regard to that easy to recognize.

Hot-V
Audi seem to be consistent in the choice of drive. The first generation S4 was a 2.7 litre biturbo V6 with 265 hp, which in the next generation, was exchanged for an atmospheric 4.2 V8 with 344 horsepower. That block should still be in the S5 Coupe, but for the previous generation S4 was a 3.0 litre V6 with supercharger. The number of pk’s took off to 333 pieces, but thanks to the slightly higher torque which also was previously available, the V8 beat in the sprint.

And now change to Audi, the design of the engine: the swept volume of 3.0 litres remains the same, but the supercharger is exchanged for a twin-scroll turbo within the cilinderbanken is placed. Such a Hot-V construction allows for a shorter gas flow rates with less loss and also make a compact construction possible.

A trick what the V6 from the 190 hp 2.0 TFSI has acquired is the so-called B-battle, a principle, which the Prius also used to save fuel. In any case, in theory, is the new S4 B9 so again, more fuel-efficient than its predecessor and would have to be satisfied with 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers. The rest of the figures are at least just as impressive. The V6 delivers to the peak power of 354 horsepower, enough so to the limited top speed of 250 km/h. The torque curve is completely bizarre, from 1370 rpm delivers a V6 its maximum torque of 500 Nm. Dertienhonderdzeventig revolutions per minute. Maximum torque. In a gasoline engine. WTF.

The sprint to the 100 goes in 4.7 seconds. That is fast, because the infamous RS6 C6 with V10 do this, but 0.1 seconds faster.

No manual gearbox and no S-tronic more
That the manual gearbox the field needs to clean up is not so very strange, less and less buyers to choose from. Weird is that Audi does not choose to for the S-tronic (DSG) box with dual clutch transmission with its lightning-fast delivers crisp shifting. Whilst overall I bake not, incidentally, because the traditional eight speed automatic transmission is doing great.

More tailhappy, but no Focus RS
With the chassis of the S4, Audi has steep steps. The traditional criticism is that Audi S and RS models only but straight want and as exciting onderstuurd the ditch in glide. Also for the previous generation S4 was that it was not entirely the truth, but for this new S4 again steps to make the driving more exciting. Anyway, the S4 is 75 kg lighter, but the chassis is a great upgrade. The veercomfort is improved, and by default sends the quattro system’s 60% of the power to the rear. If the circumstances demand it goes up to 70% of the power to the rear or up to 85% to the front axle.

Nevertheless, it is of the four wheel drive is mainly intended to gripverlies. Audi chooses not to be like Ford with the Focus RS (driving test) a driftmodus to implement. A set of rear tires oproken is not so quick in a S4, but beyond that, the balance beautifully. Depending on how aggressive you submit, the superelevation of the road and the amount of gas you feel the back or don’t move. What that involves exactly as many as the want, not a car that will be directly overdriven the forest invliegt, but also not only but boring understeer.

Interior
Beautiful. More words means we don’t need no dirt. The colors or materials may not be your taste, but even then you can not only enjoy the superb finish. For the interior scores Audi ten points, and deklasseert some competitors (hello Lexus, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo). Other (BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo) to come near, but this level yet.

Price and competition
A target price of 76.000 euro in the Netherlands puts the S4 just under the thicker stuff (M3, C63), but it is significantly more expensive than a “naked” BMW 340i set (driving test). It seems to me a fair price for an all-rounder as the S4. Movie!
