February 4th in history: test of the Moscow metro, the launch of Facebook and the change of power in Microsoft

4 February 1935 from the station “Sokolniki” to the station “Park of culture” has passed the first test train Moscow metro. The testing was successful. In the end, on may 15, 1935 was opened the first line, with ten stations. Today Moscow metro consists of 199 stops. 44 stations are recognized as objects of cultural heritage.

The Moscow metro has one of the highest passenger traffic in the world. The number of transported people to the capital’s “underground” is second only to Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo and Shanghai metro. In 2014 the services of the Moscow “underground” used 2451,3 million people. For comparison: in the St. Petersburg metro for the same calendar period has been only 763 million passengers.

The Moscow metro is not only a means of moving from one end of town to another. Many stops were designed including the calculation of population protection from airstrikes. The deepest station of the Moscow metro is “Park Pobedy”. She “dug” at a distance of 84 metres from the surface of the earth. In 2005, Dmitry Glukhovsky released the novel “Metro 2033”, which tells of the survival of a small group of people in the Moscow metro after a nuclear war. In principle, we cannot exclude such a scenario. Some (very deep) station really was designed with the expectation of a possible atomic bombing. For example, the station “Taganskaya” (53 meters below ground) and the nearby “Bunker-42” (now there is a Museum of “Cold war”), located at a depth of 60 meters. With an area of about 7000 m2 shelter will withstand an explosion with a capacity of 400 kilotons. In the presence of an underground tunnel connecting the station “Taganskaya” (circle line) with “Kursk”. Shallow underground structures (up to 20 metres underground) is capable of withstanding an explosion of the order of 10-20 kilotons. Deeper stations — up to 100 kilotons. So in the event of danger and the appearance of alerts on the street and in the media immediately run to the nearest the metro station. Or in a specially equipped bomb shelter.

By the way, the scientist Livermore national laboratory Michael Dillon believes that the threat of a nuclear strike during the military clashes between States is very small. It is disadvantageous to all parties to the conflict. And yet, in his opinion, there is a possibility that an atomic bomb of small capacity (10-20 kilotons) could fall into the hands of terrorists. And it’s scary.
