BMW M3
The only generation of M3 with a V8 was fitted, but that is hardly a disadvantage.

First appeared on the coupe with manual gearbox, but soon followed by the DCT tank with dual clutch and came to the other body variants. The sedan lacks the carbon fiber roof of the coupe, but is still barely heavier. That is not true for the cabriolet, with a steel klapdak more than 200 kg more in weight. If you have an M3 to the collection in the basement want to add, then search for a M3 GTS in orange. The GTS is 165 kg lighter and has a 4,4-litre opgeboorde V8 with 440 hp.

Offer used cars

  • At AutoScout24, about 35 M3 of this generation.
  • The sedan is the most rare and constitutes a fifth of the offer.
  • Convertibles are something more, but more than half are coupes.
  • About 50% has the DCT automatic transmission.
  • Prices start at 30 mille.

Pros

  • The M3 is, and remains, an icon.
  • Super-performance, but also usable for all day.
  • Relatively inflation-proof.

Issues

  • A M3 eats tyres and brakes and drunk fuel, a real feestnummer so.
  • Make sure the first turn at 2000 km done. The V8 engine had a special inrijprogramma with other liquids, but that may no longer have been.
  • Oil consumption is usually. Regularly gauge and refill so. That should be via iDrive and is not insanely accurate. Do it anyway!
  • The electronic accelerator pedal can be in a limp home program. Often to solve by car 15 minutes closed to let it “rest”. If it occurs more frequently have to throttle actuators replaced.
  • If the M3 a hard life on the circuit, the differential lock to reach the end. Note on strange noise from the rear axle.
  • With the facelift in 2011 are some of the materials in the interior a little less nice, but you will need to do a light search.
  • DCT tank: if there are problems, is that often when pulling away. That should move smoothly and not like your cousin without a driver’s license, the link serves. A software update resolves this usually, but make sure the car is good before you purchase.
  • In the pre-facelift coupe’s, the scoops of the brake lights off, brake lights go on randomly.
  • Belt-re-established-things are not always attentive, but it’s not really a reason to have an M3 therefore.
  • Stelmotoren throttle body: this is the only real weak point of the S65 V8. Leads to loss of power or a christmas tree of error messages. There are two and they are (unfortunately) quite expensive (2000 euro).
  • BMW M engines have since the S50 1993 a history with the connecting rod bearings. Between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, it is not unwise they preemptively replaced. If they are too far to wear, then follow the krukaslagers and running costs up to 10,000 euros.
