Opel Astra H
We know ‘m all, but in fact it was the Astra H but a short time in production. The sales were not, however, and so there is a lot of demand on the second hand market.

In the spring of 2004 the Opel Astra H available on the market. Especially in the field of quality and finishing wanted Opel made a huge step to make in respect of the previous generation. The Astra came in four variants: a five-door hatchback, driedeurs GTC, a train station, and also a convertible, TwinTop to be baptized. The Opel Astra GTC was introduced in 2005, one of the first cars in which a panoramic roof available. In the end, the Astra H in 2009, again out of production, only the TwinTop and GTC remained a year longer in the showroom. In 2007, a subtle facelift is implemented.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Comfort
  • Nicely finished
  • Low maintenance costs

Issues

  • The master cylinder and brake booster from the 1.7 CDTi are not very solid. Check whether the car constantly and firmly inhibits.
  • The 1.3 and 1.9 diesels are equipped with particulate filters which easily become clogged. The engine management is then more diesel to inject in the hope that it will clean everything burning, but usually this results only in bigger problems, like broken turbo’s.
  • At each change of the timing belt the 1.9 diesel should also have the water pump replaced. This is often piece and ensures that the block with the soup runs.
  • The dynamos of the 1.9 diesel are also prone to malfunction.
  • EGR systems are prone to clogging.
  • In 2008, Opel a recall for the petrol engines because the flywheels and clutch problems gave.
  • Ruitenwissermotoren and arms are above average often, so just as well to check if everything works / is fixed as it should be.
  • The power steering sometimes goes piece. Easy to check, of course.
  • In the first years is still, however, that the key is not being recognized by the ignition switch. This is later resolved.
  • The computer for the engine management is in an awkward place, under the left front fender. Check around this unit or there is no leakage, because the water does not go well together with sensitive electronics.
  • If the fuel gauge, wipers, central locking system and/or lighting is not good work, this may be due to one of the computers in the dashboard or in the back of the car.
  • Check the horn it does.
  • If the engine is not fast enough at the temperatures it is likely a thermostat, a weak point of the Astra.
  • The handbrake is still. Parking in gear!
  • Check the bottom of the car for rust, especially the subframe and the shock absorbers.
  • The sills of the TwinTop still even rust. They have been adapted to more stiffness, but it remains water. A “quick & dirty” fix is to have a few holes in the plugs of the drainage channels to drilling.
